Just like the where and when, your outfits should also be a reflection of you as individuals and as a couple. It may feel a little overwhelming to find something that represents you two — don’t stress! This post is going to help you figure all of that out.
Picking Your Outfits
Think about what you wear when you want to feel confident in comfortable. Is there a flowy dress that you will try to wear at just about every occasion? This could be a winner. Have you been eyeing up a pair of heels that you desperately want but haven’t had an excuse to buy? Now you have a great excuse!
Neutrals and muted tones with pops of color are the key to absolutely gorgeous photos. Blacks, creams, greys, and muted pastels are a good base, but don’t forget to add in some pops of color. Neutrals plus turquoise pumps or a yellow bowtie will completely transform the look of your photos.
Adding in accessories is another must-do to make your engagement photos personal. You don’t have to go crazy. Chunky necklaces, unique boot socks, or a wide-brimmed hat may be the little something you need to make the look a little more stylish.
A fitted, checkered button-up is likely your guy’s go-to dress shirt, but challenge him to be the most stylish version of himself for engagement photos. Something just a little bit more edgy than usual – a thick cardigan sweater, a chambray shirt, or suspenders should do the trick. He can roll up his sleeves for part of the session to make the look a little more casual, then layer a blazer or jacket later on.
Keep in mind that some really great outfits aren’t great for engagement photos. Leave the baseball caps and sporty t-shirts at home. You’ll also want to avoid any apparel with college or sports teams logos. It sounds like a better idea than it is, trust me! Feel free to bring your favorite jersey for one or two photos, but not for the main event. Ladies, avoid overly-baggy button-up shirts, light-colored denim, and anything with a lot of logos. Make sure your outfit doesn’t accidentally show bra straps or underwear lines. You also should both avoid polos, sneakers, or anything that would unintentionally show skin (like pants that often slide down). However, intentionally showing off a little skin = awesome.
You may want to consider scheduling your make-up or hair trial on the same day of the engagement session. Getting dolled-up does wonders for confidence (trust me, I know from personal experience!). My favorite look is neutral, natural colors, dark lashes, and well-trimmed and defined brows. Don’t forget nail polish before the session. Again, I love the natural look, but choose what fits with the rest of your outfit. Treat yourself to a french mani-pedi beforehand (again – something about pampering yourself makes you feel more confident!). If you’d like to spring for a brighter color, make sure the paint is in good condition (with no chips) right before the session.
Men, it is a must to have well-trimmed facial hair. I am all about the beard or mustache if it is nicely groomed. Subtle five o’clock shadow is also very acceptable. But please don’t come to the session with unnecessary scruff or unattended neck hair! I generally can trust the ladies to tell you this without my help . . .
Remember, you want to look and feel attractive on the day of your engagement photos. You already know what clothing is and is not flattering on your body type, stick to what you know you feel good in and rock it!
I give these as guidelines, not rules! I’m sure you have your own personal style, and it might completely go against these tips. Hopefully this post will help you in deciding on your apparel and get you excited about your engagement session! As always, feel free to get in touch with me or post a question below!
