Last week, I discussed when to book your engagement session. In this week’s post, I’ll be addressing the second question – Where should I book my engagement session?
This is such a fun decision that couples get to make together! You may choose a place with sentimental value, or a place that you’ve never been to but have always wanted to visit. The decision you make should be exciting and fun, not stressful! Here are a few tips to help you enjoy the process:
WHERE SHOULD WE GO?
As you think about which locations may be best for an engagement session, consider options that reflect both of your personalities. Think about what inspires and excites you. Where have you been together? What memories have you made in the duration of your relationship? Think of places with sentimental value, or places that represent hobbies, and even your jobs. This session should be personal to YOU. The best locations are naturally beautiful and kinda obscure, so consider avoiding extremely recognizable landmarks or buildings to make your photos unique.
Brainstorm together about what makes your relationship and personalities unique. What do you love? If you’re both self-proclaimed sommeliers, consider traveling to a local vineyard. If you’re lovers of nature, a hike to one of your secret spots would be a great adventure. If you are foodies and love to try new things, maybe a trip to a local farmers’ market is right for you.
Adding in an activity you love – like biking, tea-drinking, or horseback riding – is a great way to personalize your session. (Side note: if you are planning on doing a horseback riding session for your engagement photos, you’re incredible and we need to work together now!) It also takes a little bit of camera-shyness away when you’re doing something familiar. Don’t let yourself be limited to the ideas you have seen friends or family members try for their own engagement session. The very best sessions are unique, creative and totally you.
While your location should reflect your style, it doesn’t need to be super deep or conceptual. Don’t feel the need to make up a super-artsy or hipster idea, especially if that’s not you. Sometimes the simplest ideas are perfect for reflecting a couple’s personality. I often help couples brainstorm when they are stuck, so if you’re working with me, don’t hesitate to ask for help!
I hope this post is getting the wheels turning in your brain as you decide on a location! There is absolutely no “one size fits all” or “best spot in the world” for engagement photos, but I can tell you that copying someone else’s idea directly is usually pretty boring for everyone. Make it personal!
