Are you one of those rare people staying in DC for Memorial Day weekend? Have you been struggling to make plans because EVERYONE seems to be out of town on a mini-cation, family visit or extended boat day? Fear not! We have a super fun MDW itinerary prepared for you which you can enjoy with your S.O., a friend or even all on your own!
SATURDAY
After you adequately catch up on sleep, head out west to Greenhill Vineyards for a relaxing and restorative afternoon. Greenhill has fantastic mezze menu with several themed boards to choose from. The French, Spanish & Italian are all delightful. If you just want to snack, one board is enough for two people! If you’re looking for a full meal, make a pit stop at Knead Wine before heading to the vineyard, where you can get to-go pizza and chat with master sommelier and owner, Jarad.
If you’re going with your S.O. or a friend, pack your favorite board game to play while you sip. I’ve been loving playing A Little Wordy with Evan lately! If you’re on your own, pack an easy-to-read book or your kindle. I’m a huge Agatha Christie fan, and a favorite recent read of mine is The Man in the Brown Suit by Agatha Christie ($0.59 with Kindle!). If you’re not a big reader, bring another low-key hobby that you enjoy – like a journal, sketch book, or Sudoku.
End the evening driving home with the windows down listening to the 2023 album of the year (which we love!): Harry’s House // Harry Styles
SUNDAY
Continuing the relaxed vibes from yesterday, fire up the grill at your house or head to your fav local park with a grill to try a few of our favorite grill recipes. Choose from anything below.
Grilled Pizza: This is legit the BEST way to make homemade pizza, IMO. I recommend using Trader Joe’s pre-made pizza dough and sauce and then choosing your favorite toppings to add from there. White pizza is also incredibly delicious when grilled!
Grilled Chicken Pineapple Kebabs: At the beginning of summer, this is the first grill recipe I make every year. It is SO good. I typically include chicken, pineapple, a variety of peppers, red onion and broccoli. If you want a fast and easy marinade, go for McCormick’s Bourbon Brown Sugar which is sold at basically every major grocery store.
Grilled Angel Food Cake: Admittedly have not tried this one, but it’s at the top of my list for this weekend! I will also prob sub out the blueberries for blackberries or strawberries – whatever berry is looking best in the grocery store!
If you’ve managed to cobble together a group of friends, head to the nearest pickleball courts and play a few games! If you’ve never played before, check out this how-to guide to get started!
MONDAY
Spend the final day of MDW enjoying city life and paying tribute to those whom the holiday was made by going step-by-step through this walking tour of the monuments. It’s over 2 miles long, so bring comfortable shoes and a bottle of water! Altogether, this tour takes about 2-3 hours. Take your time with each monument and stop at a food truck along the way to complete the “tourist for the day” theme.
If you’re still energized at the end of the walking tour, keep walking or grab an Uber all the way to the Wharf for takeout at Falafel Inc. or feel-good Mexican at Mi Vida.
And that’s a wrap! Tell us what you thought or if you used our itinerary for your weekend by commenting or emailing us at info@LVERphoto.com!
